In a world where information is literally at a person’s fingertips, the ways in which people access that information is changing. Through social media, individuals are able to connect with others across the country and the globe, allowing a broader exchange of news. Throughout this evolution, social media apps have also updated themselves to fit this model and in doing so have become an integral part of the news experience. But with so many different types of social media, is there a way to better optimize certain formats? The purpose of this study was to understand the types of stories news outlets publish on two short-form social media outlets - Snapchat and Twitter. In doing so, the author aimed to determine how Snapchat Discover, a newer aspect of the extremely fast-growing Snapchat app, was being utilized by a variety of different news outlets. Moreover, this research aims to fill a gap in the understanding of what kind of news stories are being published on short-form social media sites, specifically Snapchat.
